Academy Fellows // Ursula W. Goodenough, Ph.D.

Ursula W. Goodenough, Ph.D.
Ursula W. Goodenough, Ph.D.
Professor of Biology and of Anatomy and Neurobiology, Washington University

Dr. Goodenough studies genetic, molecular and evolutionary aspects of the life cycle of the flagellated green algae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Author of a successful textbook on genetics and of a highly popular book on the interface between science and the religious experience, Dr. Goodenough and colleagues have cloned genes in Chlamydomonas that play important roles controlling the transition between vegetative growth and sexual reproduction. Cloning these genes has allowed Dr. Goodenough's team to investigate the details of how these genes function, and how they have evolved among the algae.
