From Love Letters to Marriage: Gender and HIV Risk

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 @ 10:00 AM-11:30 AM

Featured Speaker: Shanti A. Parikh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Anthropology in Arts & Sciences, Washington University in St. Louis

For many women around the world, their greatest risk of contracting HIV comes through having sexual intercourse with their husbands. Washington University anthropologist, Dr. Shanti Parikh, presents research she has conducted on HIV in Uganda since 1996. This poor East African country is widely cited as the AIDS success story, but rates of infection among married women continue to increase. She explores the social and economic contexts that surround both the AIDS epidemic and men’s extramarital sex, and argues that in trying to understand the epidemic, the affectionate side of sexuality cannot be ignored.
