Group Genius: The Creative Power of Collaboration

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 @ 7:00 PM-8:00 PM

R. Keith Sawyer, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education and Psychology in Arts & Sciences, Washington University in St. Louis; author, Group Genius: The Creative Power of Collaboration

We’re all familiar with the myth of the “lone genius,” but this commonly held notion about creativity is misleading. Creativity likes company and it’s always collaborative, even when you believe you’re flying solo. Inventions, important discoveries and innovation always originate in collaboration. Washington University psychologist and one of the country’s leading experts on the science of creativity, Dr. Keith Sawyer, tears down some of our most popular myths about creativity and erects new principles in their place, to show us how creativity is always a shared enterprise. Dr. Sawyer draws on compelling stories about the inventions that change our world: the ATM, the mountain bike, the personal computer, to reveal the true collaborative story of innovation. His empowering message is that all of us have the potential to be more creative; we just need to learn the secrets of group genius.
