Hearing Loss and Music: The World of Sound Beyond Language

Thursday, July 17, 2014 @ 7:00 PM-9:00 PM

LimbFeatured Speaker: Charles J. Limb, M.D., Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; faculty, Peabody Conservatory of Music

2014 marks the 100-year anniversary of CID – Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis. To help commemorate this momentous occasion, CID is hosting a special guest speaker for a Centennial lecture and reception at EPNEC at Washington University Medical Center.

Dr. Limb is a TED Talks speaker well known for his captivating studies using neuroimaging techniques to study the creative process in jazz and rap artists. To learn more about what motivates this talented physician/scientist, check out: Music on the Mind and CSI: Beethovan.

Research on hearing loss has concentrated on regaining access to sound for the purpose of communication, but language is not the only way hearing affects our lives. Dr. Charles Limb’s CID Centennial talk focuses on one particular area of sound that is often overlooked: music. For individuals who can hear, music is a basic part of life. For people who are deaf and hard of hearing, enjoying music can be difficult because hearing technology is not yet sufficiently advanced to restore the full range of sound.

Join us for this special event and help congratulate CID for 100 years of service to children who are deaf and hard of hearing, and the professionals who help them listen, talk, read and succeed.

FREE and OPEN to ALL. Registration is Required. Junior Academy members and middle and high school students are welcome and encouraged to attend. To register CLICK HERE.
