The idea of music as a healing influence on human health and behavior is at least as old as the writings of Aristotle and Plato. Music therapy as an organized clinical profession in the 20th century traces its formal beginnings to the years following World Wars I and II when both professional and amateur community musicians traveled to Veterans hospitals around the country to play for the thousands of returning veterans experiencing both the physical and emotional traumas of war. Today, music therapy is a growing field in the healthcare industry.
In this insightful and educational presentation on the science of music therapy, board-certified music therapist for Saint Louis University Cancer Center, Crystal Weaver, talks about the evidence-based practice of music therapy and how it is being put into play to assist with pain management and physical rehabilitation in St. Louis area hospitals.
Music as Medicine is a Science in St. Louis Series partnership of the The Academy of Science – St. Louis and St. Louis County Libraries.
