On October 15, 2021, with the help of a crane, 2,500 pounds (1,134 kilograms) of fossilized Parrosaurus missouriensis, the Missouri State Dinosaur, was excavated near Glen Allen, Missouri, by researchers from The Field Museum in Chicago and the Sainte Genevieve Museum Learning Center, to make its way to the Field Museum for preparation, research, and eventual display. The find is significant, in that it is one of a very few species discovered that lived on the east coast of the Western Interior Seaway, the shallow inland sea that split the North American continent into two landmasses during most of the early and mid-Cretaceous Period.
