Featured Cafe Presenter: Adam Weyhaupt, Ph.D., Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Fontbonne University
When asked to describe major advances in science and knowledge, people typically describe results from medicine, engineering, computing, and chemistry — mathematics wouldn’t often be mentioned. What is mathematics research? What are some of the questions mathematicians wrestle with? What is mathematics like in the age of social media and supercomputers? We’ll talk about these questions and explore some open (unsolved!) problems in theoretical mathematics. This Cafe’ won’t require any mathematics you learned in school, so bring your curiosity but leave your algebra at home.
Cafe Presenter Bio:
Adam Weyhaupt grew up in the St. Louis area. He received bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science from Eastern Illinois University and earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Indiana University in 2006. He is currently Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Fontbonne University in St. Louis. His academic interests are varied and include the interaction of geometry and topology in minimal surfaces (mathematical models of soap bubbles and films) and in problems in geometry and social choice theory suitable for work with undergraduates. He is passionate about the liberal arts and loves illustrating the beautiful and surprising open problems in theoretical mathematics. In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors (camping, hiking, and boating) with his wife and two sons.
There’s More to Mathematics than Algebra is a Teen Science Cafe Event of the The Academy of Science – St. Louis presented in partnership with Fontbonne University.
