Featured Speaker: Gerardo Camilo, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology, Environmental Science and International Studies, Saint Louis University, and Conservation Fellow, Saint Louis Zoo

Artist Jennifer Angus’s exhibition, Locusts and Honey, evokes the Victorian Era, an age in which travel, exploration and scientific study were immensely popular. Today, it’s a new era of travel, exploration and scientific study, no less exotic. Entomologist and Saint Louis University biology professor Dr. Gerardo Camilo, one of the world’s foremost authorities on food webs and food chains, talks about the scientific study of insects today and helps us discover the intrinsic beauty of insects in the natural world.

Insects are Earth’s most diverse group of animals, with estimates of as high as 30 million species worldwide. While most of us know the important roles they play in ecosystems, as well as economies—pollination, soil fertility, biological control, less well known are the range of beautiful structures, shapes and colors of many insect species. Dr. Camilo sheds light on how shape and color have evolved among different insect groups, and why we find them so intriguing and beautiful. You won’t want to miss the first in this new series from the Academy and Craft Alliance that looks at the connections between art and science.
