In 2008 in collaboration with local Kuva Coffee Company, the William L. Brown Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden brought Cafe Peru Chilchos from Peru’s Chilchos Valley to Local Harvest Grocery here in St. Louis.  This environmentally and economically sustainable coffee is grown without artificial fertilizers or chemicals under shade trees in the the Chilchos Valley’s dense cloud forests.  Accessible only by mule trail and a two day journey, the Chilchos Valley is an isolated region whose inhabitants have a tremendous respect for the Valley’s beautiful and fragile natural environment.  For hundreds of years, they have lived in harmony with the ecosystem.

The Brown Center’s valuable, forged direct marketing relationship provides key economic support to the farmers of Chilchos.  Obtaining a premium above world market value for their coffee, farmers dramatically improve their economic fortunes.  The benefits are distributed to improve health, education and community relations, and guarantee responsible use of resources and conservation of the fragile cloud forest environment.  The environmentally sustainable coffee, grown on small family farms, means farmers maintain their cultural identity.

Explore the Peruvian region where Cafe Peru Chilchos is grown and journey with us on its long trip to St. Louis in this warm and intimate coffee tasting and science talk you won’t want to miss!

The Coffee Route is being presented in conjunction with the traveling exhibition, Coffee: The World in Your Cup, on display at the Missouri History Museum through January 3, 2016.
