Race, ethnicity, ancestry, geography — these terms are used to classify members of the human race. But how meaningful are they? Recent studies in anatomy and genetics document an inherent unity in the human species and suggest that the way we categorize “difference” may be cultural rather than biological. What can we learn from biology about the fundamental unity and the marvelous diversity in the human community?
