Uganda: Gender and HIV Risk

Thursday, December 10, 2009 @ 10:00 AM-11:30 AM

Featured Speaker: Shanti A. Parikh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Anthropology in Arts & Sciences

Washington University anthropologist, Dr. Shanti Parikh, presents research she has conducted on HIV in Uganda since 1996. This poor East African country is widely cited as the AIDS success story, but rates of infection among married women continue to increase. For many women around the world, their greatest risk of contracting HIV comes from their husbands. Dr. Parikh explores the social and economic contexts that surround the AIDS epidemic.
