The Transactions of the Academy of Science of St. Louis was an internationally recognized journal that documented scientific research from the St. Louis region, with a focus on natural history and expanding to a myriad of scientific disciplines over the years.
The Transactions span 133 years and 33 published volumes. The Transactions’ longevity, over a century of scientific contributions, showcases how research methods and scientific understanding have changed throughout the years.
In addition to scientific submissions, the journal included letters of correspondence, member records, and historical plans for the Academy. By 1881, the Academy was exchanging its volumes with 260 science societies across Europe and the U.S., helping to establish St. Louis’s reputation as a center for science in the expanding Midwest.
