Our vision is a St. Louis where every person can see themselves as a scientist, every voice can contribute to discovery, and the power of science is accessible to all.
At The Academy of Science of St. Louis, we believe curiosity is universal and that every person has the capacity to ask questions, make observations, and contribute to scientific discovery. We envision a St. Louis region where every person—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, zip code, income, or ability—can see themselves as a potential scientist and as someone who can shape the future through science.
We believe science is a powerful tool for understanding ourselves, our communities, our world, and our universe. Through curiosity, observation, analysis, and discovery, science can reveal new knowledge, solve problems, and create a better future. We also recognize that science has not always been used for the benefit of everyone. Throughout history, scientific knowledge and institutions have sometimes been used to exclude, disenfranchise, and harm communities, while the contributions and perspectives of many people have been left out of the scientific record.
We are committed to confronting that history while building a more inclusive scientific future. We seek to dismantle barriers that gatekeep scientific knowledge, research, and opportunity and to expand access to both the processes and benefits of science. Scientific discovery is stronger when people with different experiences, perspectives, and ideas have the opportunity to participate.
We are committed to strengthening St. Louis’s scientific power by elevating responsible scientific voices, creating equitable opportunities to engage in research and innovation, and connecting our community with scientific tools, knowledge, and opportunities.
Above all, we believe science belongs to everyone. Our work is grounded in the conviction that every St. Louisan should have the opportunity to engage with science, benefit from scientific progress, and imagine themselves as part of the scientific community.
